Falk was led into the interview room where he waited for the detectives to come in and talk to him. He’d been in jail all night, ever since fleeing the train yard. Going down the highway at over ninety miles per hour, he was pulled over for speeding. Then the officers suspected him of being under the influence and got him out of the car. He failed the breathalyzer test, the officers found narcotics in the car, as well as several weapons. Knowing he was probably going to be put away for a long time, Falk asked to speak with someone about cutting a deal.
The door opened and two detectives stepped inside. One was Lieutenant Downing, a twenty-year veteran. He was about six feet tall, more on the thin side, but had a grizzled face that suggested he’d been through the wringer. He was considered a bit of a hard-nose, unsympathetic at times in his pursuit of suspects. All that mattered to him was getting the job done in whatever way was necessary. He wasn’t against bending the rules to suit what he needed as long as it didn’t seriously cross the line. But at times he’d hop over that line.
The other man was Detective Gruber, who’d been a detective for ten years. Downing’s unit was usually the first one called for major cases. Murders, robberies, high-profile cases, they were considered the best. They were relentless in their pursuit of suspects. Some in the department joked that the team never stopped working, never left the office, and didn’t have a life outside of the department. There was some level of truth in that. Downing was divorced and without children, so he put everything into his work. It wasn’t uncommon for him to work fifteen-hour days. He had four other men in his unit, and only one was married. And that detective still worked twelve-hour days. They were just devoted to their work and took a lot of pride in what they did. They didn’t even mind working off the clock if that’s what was necessary. And they did it often.
Downing and Gruber sat across from Falk. Downing put down a file folder with Falk’s history and background inside. Gruber set down a pad of paper and a pen so he could write notes. Falk was considered a dangerous man, and the police were well acquainted with his name already, as he was rumored to have been involved in several robberies that they were already looking into.
“Before we get started, my name is Lieutenant Downing, and this is Detective Gruber. I hear you requested us.”
“If you’re the top guys. If you’re the guys to talk to about making a deal,” Falk replied.
“Well, that would depend on what you have to say.”
“I’ve been involved in some things. Can give you names, dates, places, things like that.”
Downing wasn’t yet impressed. He’d heard the claims before from various criminals, and sometimes the information wasn’t worth much. “In return for what?”
“I don’t wanna go to jail.
